Nearly five years since Whakaari White Island in New Zealand erupted, tragically leaving 22 dead, 25 seriously injured, and countless family, friends, and loved ones forever changed, the criminal trial for systematic safety failures has ended with five guilty parties and $10.21 million NZD ($9.4 million AUD) in reparations (although there is now an appeal underway).

Richard started his H&S career in 1993 while completing his master’s examining attitudes towards safety. He was a founder director of Impac, growing its consulting, training, and software business areas. He has worked with many of New Zealand’s largest companies and government departments, and has been engaged by Regulators (CAA, WorkSafe) to help with the determination of “reasonable practicable” controls after several significant events.
